HALLOWEEN GAME GFX.png

A fang-tastic Halloween themed game

I’ve always been a huge fan of Halloween and since most of the communication topics I learned as an undergraduate are too advanced for primary school I tried to center around something fun and can also be challenging for the students. This topic is about expanding the students' Halloween vocabulary and also tangents on some culture around Halloween. In this topic, I tried to be more empathetic to the students learning styles and decided that I would integrate multimedia that they can relate to!

Strengths and weaknesses

This project was done for 1st and 2nd grade primary school students and I can confidently recommend its use for higher levels of primary school and ESO.

The final project's strengths are its use of multimedia that the kids can relate to. In class when we did this, the kids respond very well to the attached videos – excited they were! The topic at hand is also something the students has shown extra interest in, who doesn’t love Halloween?

One weakness around this project is that it's too niche, you can only do a Halloween presentation during October or November.

The objectives for this project are To expand the students’ vocabulary and to

Exercise students’ retention skills and spatial intelligence by asking questions related to the vocabulary presented in a game

The Final Project: Text

The materials for this project include a PowerPoint presentation teaching the students necessary vocabulary in the topic (retrieved from games4esl.com as they provide a really child-friendly version of Halloween related words), both presented visually and spoken to by the “hosts” and a PowerPoint presentation game. The format of the game is each correct answer is a point a non-answer is 0 points, most points win the game. The game consists of slides that include a different picture of the words presented ex. Mummy that’s botched, covered up, or altered in some way to challenge the students. When showing the answer for each puzzle, a video will be played with a child-friendly animation on the said word for further reinforcement of the newly learned word.

How to use this activity

The teacher plays the role of a game show host who facilitates who gets to answer and if they earned a point or not while the Language assistant relates the newly-learned words for the students and act as a game show co-host. The host duo also is in charge of presenting the first presentation introducing these words to the students.

As with any host and co-host relationship, the key is giving and taking. The teacher inputs his/her valuable knowledge and experience into the activity that the LA has prepared and researched. Whatever lacks from the LA’s experience and knowledge the teacher can offer her input and vice versa

Evaluation

The activity will be evaluated by the quiz which only has one correct answer. The students then need to identify at least one-third of the quiz items presented.

The learning objectives are met when the students answer more than 75 % of the questions, otherwise, the activity can be repeated until the students retain the newly added words in their vocabulary

FinalNotes

Besides the mentioned powerpoints, the students are encouraged to participate in Halloween related activities to reinforce these newly added vocabulary words in their annals. In Pinocho we even did a whole Halloween themed lunch break that included some really spooky breakfast and snacks. The newly learned Halloween words just came in very handy!

In regards to diverse learning styles and levels of achievement among students. This activity encompasses listening and reading. If in any case, a student’s learning style doesn’t prepare him for this activity we can slow down and empathize with the student whilst finding ways to incorporate his learning style to be able to participate in the activity. In school, some students even opted to not just answer the questions but to also act out their answers!

A take away from this project that I integrate in my future lessons are creating a breather section for the students, for this project it’s the multimedia videos shown every after question and answer. This multimedia is supposed to reinforce the topic at hand while being entertaining enough for the students!
